《포월(抱越) Layered Beyond》은 이안북스의 강주리 아티스트 북 『무향시간(無向時間) No Arrow of Time』의 발간과 함께 책이라는 매체 안에 응축되었던 작가의 시간에 대한 사유를 보다 확장된 조형 언어와 공간적 감각으로 풀어낸 자리다. 섬유와 종이, 잉크와 선, 반복과 중첩이라는 조형적 언어를 통해 작가는 보다 감각적인 차원에서 자신만의 ‘시간의 생태계’를 구현해낸다. 더 가까이 보고, 넘기며 직접 감각할 수 있는 책이라는 매체와 작가의 시간을 담은 소리, 냄새 등을 포함한 층위의 현장을 목격할 수 있는 전시가 동시에 펼쳐진다

전시 제목 ‘포월(抱越)’은 ‘안고 넘어간다’는 뜻이다. 이는 경계를 단순히 넘어야 할 대상으로 인식하기보다, 서로 다른 시간과 감각, 물질과 흔적을 끌어안고 축적하며 새로운 상태로 변화하는 과정 자체를 의미한다. 강주리에게 이번 전시 작업은 완결된 결과를 향해 나아가는 직선적 행위가 아니라, 끊임없이 중첩되고 변이하며 스스로를 갱신하는 유기적 생태계에 가깝다. 《포월》은 그 과정의 단면을 보여주는 자리이자, 작가가 구축해온 시간의 층위 위에 새로운 감각의 지형을 더해가는 현재진행형의 장이다.

강주리 작업의 핵심에는 오랜 시간 축적해온 수행적 노동의 감각이 자리한다. 화면 위를 빽빽하게 메우는 크로스해칭(cross-hatching)은 단순한 묘사 기법을 넘어, 수많은 단선이 교차하고 쌓이며 시간의 밀도를 형성하는 하나의 수행적 행위로 작동한다. 반복되는 손의 움직임 안에서 매 순간 미세하게 달라지는 선택과 흔적들은 하나의 선형적 결과를 향해 수렴하기보다, 서로 다른 시간과 감각이 공존하는 복수의 층위를 만들어내며 작가만의 독자적인 조형 언어를 형성해왔다. 이번 전시의 주요 신작 〈경계 흐린 존재들〉은 이러한 수행성을 보다 물질적인 차원으로 확장한 작업이다. 전주 한지 장인과 협업해 제작한 닥섬유를 기반으로, 종이를 뜨고 염색하고 그 위에 드로잉을 더한 뒤 다시 물에 적셔 서로 엉겨 붙도록 주무르고 건조하는 과정을 반복함으로써, 서로 다른 시간성을 지닌 층위들이 사라지지 않고 겹겹이 축적되는 구조를 만들어낸다. 그렇게 형성된 화면은 고정된 형상이나 명확한 경계를 갖기보다, 침식과 퇴적, 결합과 변형이 지속적으로 일어나는 살아 있는 생태계처럼 존재한다.

전시와 함께 출간되는 아티스트 북 『무향시간』은 과거와 현재, 미래가 직선적으로 흐른다는 익숙한 시간 개념에서 벗어나, 모든 사건과 감각이 동시적으로 존재하는 비선형적 시간의 감각을 탐구한 작업이다. 오랜 수행적 작업 과정 속에서 반복되는 행위와 그 안에서 발생하는 찰나의 선택, 축적되는 흔적과 우연의 개입은 책이라는 형식을 통해 하나의 조형적 구조로 번역되었으며, 이는 기록의 매체를 넘어 시간 자체를 감각하게 하는 하나의 장치로 기능한다. 전시 《포월》은 이 책의 세계관을 공간 속 경험으로 확장한다.

공간에서는 작가의 여러 경계를 안고 넘어가고 있는 과정의 단면이자, 여러 시간의 층위를 회화, 설치, 영상 작업 등 다각적으로 경험할 수 있고 더레퍼런스 2층 서점에서 아티스트 북 『무향시간』을 직접 만나 볼 수 있다. 

Layered Beyond (抱越) unfolds alongside the publication of JooLee Kang's artist book No Arrow of Time (無向時間) by IANNBOOKS, expanding the artist's meditation on time — condensed within the medium of the book — into a broader sculptural language and spatial sensibility. Through the formal vocabulary of fiber and paper, ink and line, repetition and layering, the artist constructs her own "ecosystem of time" on a sensory level. The exhibition presents simultaneously a book that can be held close, turned page by page, and directly experienced through touch, alongside an immersive space that bears witness to multiple strata of the artist's time — including sound and scent.

The exhibition title Layered Beyond (抱越) means "to embrace and transcend." Rather than treating boundaries as something simply to be crossed, the title speaks to a process of drawing in and accumulating different temporalities, sensations, materials, and traces — transforming through that very accumulation into new states. For JooLee Kang, the work in this exhibition is not a linear progression toward a finished outcome, but something closer to an organic ecosystem that endlessly layers, mutates, and renews itself. Layered Beyond is both a cross-section of that process and an ongoing, present-tense field in which new sensory terrain is added upon the strata of time the artist has built.

At the core of JooLee Kang's practice lies a sense of performative labor accumulated over many years. The cross-hatching that densely covers her surfaces functions not merely as a descriptive technique, but as a performative act in which countless individual lines intersect and accumulate to form the density of time. Within the repetition of each hand movement, the subtly shifting choices and traces at every moment do not converge toward a single linear result; instead, they generate multiple coexisting layers in which different temporalities and sensations inhabit the same space — forming the artist's distinctive visual language. The major new work in this exhibition, Beings with Blurred Boundaries, extends this performativity into a more material dimension. Working with dak fiber produced in collaboration with a master hanji artisan in Jeonju, the piece involves a repeated process of forming paper, dyeing it, adding drawing, then wetting it again so the layers adhere and meld together before drying — creating a structure in which layers of differing temporalities do not disappear but accumulate in strata. The resulting surface exists not as a fixed form with clear boundaries, but as a living ecosystem in which erosion and sedimentation, bonding and transformation continue without end.

The artist book No Arrow of Time, published alongside the exhibition, moves away from the familiar conception of time as a linear flow of past, present, and future, and explores instead a non-linear sense of time in which all events and sensations coexist simultaneously. The repeated actions of a long performative practice — the fleeting choices that arise within them, the accumulating traces, and the interventions of chance — have been translated through the form of the book into a sculptural structure. The book thus functions not merely as a medium of record, but as a device through which time itself can be sensed. The exhibition Layered Beyond extends the world of this book into spatial experience.

JooLee Kang's artist book No Arrow of Time will be available at The Reference's exhibition space and the second-floor bookshop. On the first floor and in the basement exhibition spaces, visitors can encounter cross-sections of the artist's ongoing process of embracing and transcending various boundaries, and experience the multiple strata of time through painting, installation, video, and other works.
