이갑철은 지난 40여 년 동안 한국의 땅과 사람, 그리고 시대의 무의식이 스며 있는 풍경을 기록해 온 사진가이다. 그의 사진은 단순한 재현이나 사건의 기록을 넘어, 한국적 정서와 집단적 기억의 가장 깊은 층위를 포착하며 한국 사진의 중요한 지형을 형성해 왔다.

이번 전시는 신간 『이갑철 다른 풍경론 1979–2000』 출간을 기념함과 동시에, 그의 작업을 둘러싼 학술적·비평적 연구의 지평을 확장하기 위해 마련되었다. 특히 《충돌과 반동》의 강렬한 이미지 뒤편에서 오랫동안 분절된 채 남아 있던 그의 사유의 축—사진론, 세계관, 정신적 지층—을 하나의 연대기적 서사로 재구성해 조명한다는 점에서 의미가 깊다.

비록 ‘풍경’을 찍고 있지만, 이갑철이 실제로 응시해 온 것은 언제나 그 풍경 너머의 세계—한국인의 집단적 무의식, 존재의 진동, 시대의 파장—이다. 이번 전시는 이러한 작업의 흐름을 새로운 시각으로 읽어내며, 사진이 단순히 세계를 “보여주는” 장치를 넘어 세계를 “사유하게 하는” 매체임을 다시 확인한다. 이는 한국 사진에서 또 하나의 전환점이자, 동시대 이미지에 대한 인식의 지평을 넓히는 중요한 계기가 될 것이다.

For over forty years, Lee Gap Chul has photographed the land and people of Korea, capturing landscapes permeated by the era’s collective unconscious. His images move beyond representation or the documentation of events; they trace the deepest strata of Korean sensibility and memory, shaping an essential terrain within the history of Korean photography.

This exhibition accompanies the publication of Lee Gap Chul: Another Landscape 1979–2000 and aims to broaden the scholarly and critical horizon surrounding his practice. In particular, it seeks to reconstruct into a coherent narrative the long-scattered foundations of his thought—his photographic theory, worldview, and the unseen strata of consciousness that underlie even the iconic force of Collision and Reaction.

Although Lee photographs “landscapes,” what he has continually turned toward is the world beyond them—the collective unconscious of Koreans, the tremor of existence, and the reverberations of historical time. This exhibition reinterprets the major arc of his work from a renewed perspective and reminds us that photography is not merely a device that shows the world but a medium that allows us to think the world.

In this sense, the exhibition marks another turning point in Korean photography and opens an expanded horizon for understanding contemporary images.
