이 전시는 ‘몸’에 대한 이야기에서 출발한다. 5개국의 북큐레이터가 ‘나’와 ‘당신’ 그리고 ‘그들’의 ‘몸’을 주제로 130여 권의 아트북을 모았다. 최초 기획 의도는 ‘아시아’를 서양의 타자로서 ‘아시아 여성’의 다층적인 이미지를 책으로 솎아보자는 것이었다. 그러나 의외로 5명의 북큐레이터는 각자 다른 시선으로 ‘몸’을 훑는데, 여기에는 표현의 자유이자 궁극적인 시각언어로서 ‘몸’을 비롯해 산업화된 노동의 몸, 그리고 아시아 문화권에 속한 인종, 젠더, 페미니즘과 같은 정체성의 이슈까지 폭넓다. 이번 전시의 주제가 ‘몸’을 다루는 만큼 책이 가진 물성의 힘도 매력적이다. 눈으로만 볼 것이 아니라 오감을 열어볼 것을 권한다.

〈더레퍼런스 아시아〉는 매년 아트북 라이브러리 형식으로 아시아 순회전을 마련한다. 올해는 더레퍼런스(서울)을 시작으로 7월 일본 도쿄, 10월 대만 타이베이에서 선보일 예정이다.

This exhibition begins with a focus on the “body.” Five book curators from different countries have gathered over 130 art books centered on the bodies of “me,” “you,” and “them.” The original curatorial intent was to examine the multilayered image of the “Asian woman” as an Eastern Other through books. Unexpectedly, however, each of the five curators approaches the concept of the body from a different perspective. The scope encompasses the body as a means of expressive freedom and ultimate visual language, the industrialized laboring body, as well as issues of identity such as race, gender, and feminism within Asian cultural contexts. As the theme of this exhibition revolves around the body, the materiality of the books themselves becomes particularly compelling. Visitors are encouraged not only to look but also to engage with all five senses.

〈The Reference Asia〉 presents an annual art book library in the format of a traveling exhibition across Asia. This year, the exhibition will begin at The Reference in Seoul, followed by Tokyo, Japan in July, and Taipei, Taiwan in October.
