[프로젝트] Why Art, Why Book? with 신이호
“오래된 예술에서 모든 책들은 동일한 방법으로 읽힌다.
그러나 새로운 예술에서 모든 책은 다른 독해를 요구한다.”

책을 보고 읽고 경험한다는 건 어떤 것일까? 우리가 책을 대하는 가장 기본적인 방식은 ‘읽기'다. 우리는 대체로 주어진 단어를, 문장을, 이미지를 배열된 순서대로 읽지만 책이 제안하는 순서와 언어의 틀에서 벗어나는 순간, 책은 본래의 이야기에서 벗어나며 새로운 의식의 세계로 우리를 이끌기도 한다.
아트북 전문서점 더레퍼런스는 ‘새로운 읽기의 조건들을 창조하는 예술가의 작업과 그 영감이 되는 책에 주목하며 ‘WHY ART? WHY BOOK?’ 프로젝트를 새롭게 시작한다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 더레퍼런스는 예술가와 책 사이에 펼쳐진 상상력을 지지하며, 동시에 책이 그 자체로 예술이 되거나 작가와 작업, 작가와 관객 사이를 연결짓는 매개체가 될 때, 책이 지니는 새로운 예술적 가치를 살펴보고자 한다.

의미한 것에서 계속해서 멀어지고 새로운 외피를 입으며, 이 작업을 책과 다시 연결시키는 여러번의 시도는 새로운 독해를 요구할 뿐이다. 끊임없이 다시 책으로 돌아가기를 반복하면서 말이다.
WHY BOOK?
신이호에게 묻다. 왜 책인가?
“꼴라주는 프랑스 말로 ' 풀칠', '붙인다'라는 뜻으로 알고 있어요. 왜 책인가, 이 질문을 다시 던져보면, 내 삶과 책은 꼴라주가 되어있다는 거죠. 책 속에 등장하는 것을 우리 모두는 각자 다르게 상상하지만, 한번 그 이미지를 보면 사람들은 같은 것을 상상하곤 하죠. 혹은 이와 반대로 같은 이미지를 보아도 서로 다르게 이해하기도 하고요. 왜 그럴까를 생각해보면, 우리는 서로가 다른 삶을 살고 있기 때문이지 않나요. 다른 삶은 단순하게 다른 경험을 한다는 뜻이고, 내가 경험하고 생각하는 것의 대부분이 책이었어요.”

신이호는 중앙대학교에서 사진학을 전공했다. 졸업 후 중앙대학교 대학원에서 사진학을 전공했지만 개인적인 사정으로 2010년 모든 활동을 그만 두고서 지리산에 갔다. 2017년 서울에서 활동을 다시 시작했다. 2019년 신미경에서 신이호로 개명했다.
[Project] Why Art, Why Book? with Eeho Shin

What does it mean to look at, read, and experience a book? The most basic way we engage with a book is through ‘reading.’ We generally read the given words, sentences, and images in the order presented, but the moment we step outside the order and language framework suggested by the book, it departs from its original narrative and can lead us into new realms of consciousness.
The art book specialist bookstore, The Reference, launches the project WHY ART? WHY BOOK? to focus on artists’ works that create conditions for new ways of reading and the books that inspire them. Through this project, The Reference aims to support the imagination unfolding between artists and books, while also examining the new artistic value of books when they themselves become art or serve as a medium connecting the artist and their work, or the artist and the audience.

Continuously moving away from what is meaningful, taking on new skins, and repeatedly attempting to reconnect this work with the book requires a new form of reading. It is a process of constantly returning to the book again and again.

Asking Eeho Shin: Why books?
“I know that ‘collage’ in French means ‘gluing’ or ‘to attach.’ If I reconsider the question, why books, I realize that my life and books are like a collage. We each imagine differently what appears in a book, but once we see an image, people tend to imagine the same thing. Conversely, we might see the same image but understand it differently. Why is that? It must be because we live different lives. Different lives simply mean different experiences, and most of what I have experienced and thought about has come through books.”

Eeho Shin majored in photography at Chung-Ang University. After graduation, he continued studying photography at Chung-Ang University Graduate School, but due to personal reasons, he stopped all activities in 2010 and went to Jirisan. He resumed his practice in Seoul in 2017 and changed his name from Shin Mikyung to Eeho Shin in 2019.
