더레퍼런스는 매년 아시아 각 국의 아트북 출판과 아티스트를 소개하는 <아시아 아트북 라이브러리> 행사를 개최해 왔다. 올해는 «Asia Decades 있다-잇다 : 아트북 라이브러리 2021»라는 주제로 아시아 잡지의 ‘시간의 연대(decade), 시대정신의 연대’에 관하여 살펴본다.
잡지는 예전이나 지금이나 그 당시 사람들이 어떤 시선으로 사회를 보고 읽는가를 보여주는 지표이며, 때로는 당대의 시대정신을 집약하는 동시에 시간의 단층들이 이어 붙은 결과물이기도 하다. 언젠가는 사라질 운명에 처해있지만 잡지가 갖는 힘은 시대에 맞춰 변화하며 다양한 형태와 세분화된 주제로 더욱 강하게 사람들을 모으는 분수령이 되기도한다.
이번 전시에서는 한국 최초 페미니즘 잡지 『if』를 비롯해 2000년대 이후부터 현재까지 새롭게 등장하는 잡지들과 일본에서 출판한 사진잡지 『Decades No.1 2000_20』을 선보인다. 또한, 이와 연계하여 도쿄에서 이루어진 전의 일부 작품을 KANA KAWANISHI GALLERY의 협력으로 서울에서 순회 전시한다. 하나의 연대기처럼 이곳에 모인 잡지들을 통해 과거와 현재, 이들의 시선이 머물렀던 곳을 탐색하며 함께 따라가보길 바란다.
The Reference has annually hosted the Asia Art Book Library event, introducing art book publishing and artists from across Asia. This year, under the theme «Asia Decades Itda-Itda: Art Book Library 2021», the exhibition examines the “chronology of time (decade) and the zeitgeist” of Asian magazines.
Magazines, both past and present, serve as indicators of how people of the time viewed and interpreted society. At times, they encapsulate the spirit of the era, while also representing the result of layers of time stitched together. Although magazines are ultimately destined to disappear, their power evolves with the times, often becoming a watershed that draws people together through diverse formats and increasingly specialized themes.
This exhibition features Korea’s first feminist magazine, if, as well as magazines that have emerged from the 2000s to the present, and the Japanese photography magazine Decades No.1 2000_20. In addition, in collaboration with KANA KAWANISHI GALLERY, part of the works from the exhibition held in Tokyo will be presented in a traveling show in Seoul. Like a single chronicle, the magazines gathered here allow visitors to explore the past and present, tracing the places where their perspectives once lingered.
