국내외를 오가며 분단, 북한 그리고 아프리카에 대해 다양한 관점을 사진과 영상, 아카이브 설치로 작업해 온 작가 최원준이 9월2일부터 통의동에 위치한 갤러리 더레퍼런스에서 개인전 《하이라이프 Highlife》를 개최한다.
최원준 작가는 아프리카 음악 장르인 하이라이프와 함께 이 말이 지칭하는 의미인 ‘상류 사회의 생활 방식’이라는 의미를 이번 전시를 해석하는데 활용한다.
아프리카에서 더 나은 삶을 추구하고자 한국으로 온 이들의 삶을 하이라이프로서 조명한다. 한국인들이 생각하는 외국인 노동자의 이미지를 벗어나 실제 한국에서 행복하게 삶을 즐기며 살아가는 아프리카인들의 모습을 보여준다.
최원준｜CHE Onejoon
최원준(1979년생)은 냉전, 분단 문제를 다룬 사진 작업으로 시작하여 사진, 영화, 아카이브 설치 등의 다양한 매체를 다룬다. 2013년 아프리카에 건설된 북한의 건축과 기념비에 대한 작품 <만수대 마스터 클래스>를 제작한 이후 아프리카와 아시아의 역사, 정치 그리고 문화적 관계에 대한 연구를 하고 있다. 최근작으로는 루붐바시 비엔날레 커미션으로 제작된 장편영화 <카탕가의 소년들>이 있다. 현재 작가는 아프리카와 아시아의 역사, 정치 그리고 문화적 관계에 대한 연구를 지속하며 한국에 사는 아프리카인들의 인물사진 시리즈와 영상작업을 진행하고 있다. 작가의 그동안 국립현대미술관, 프랑스 팔레 드 도쿄, 덴마크 루이지아나 미술관 등 국내외 주요 미술관과 타이페이, 부산, 미디어시티, 뉴 뮤지엄 트리엔날레 등의 국제적인 비엔날레에서 지속적으로 작품을 발표해 왔다.
Photographer Choi Wonjoon, who has explored themes of division, North Korea, and Africa through photography, video, and archival installations both domestically and internationally, will hold a solo exhibition, Highlife, at Gallery The Reference in Tongui-dong from September 2.
Choi interprets the exhibition through the lens of Highlife, an African music genre, while also engaging with its meaning as “the lifestyle of the upper class.” The exhibition highlights the lives of Africans who came to Korea in pursuit of a better life, presenting them through the concept of Highlife. It challenges common perceptions of foreign laborers in Korea by showing African residents living joyful, fulfilling lives in the country.
CHE Onejoon
Born in 1979, Choi Wonjoon began his practice focusing on the Cold War and issues of division, and works across photography, film, and archival installations. Since producing Mansudae Master Class (2013), a work on North Korean architecture and monuments built in Africa, he has conducted research into the historical, political, and cultural relationships between Africa and Asia. His recent work includes the feature film Boys of Katanga, commissioned for the Lubumbashi Biennale. Choi continues to explore the histories, politics, and cultural connections of Africa and Asia while producing portrait series and video works of Africans living in Korea. His work has been exhibited at major institutions including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Korea), Palais de Tokyo (France), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark), and international biennales such as Taipei, Busan, Media City, and the New Museum Triennale.
