더레퍼런스 5주년을 맞이하여, 《One Picture Manifesto》 전시를 개최합니다.
《One Picture Manifesto》는 '단 한 장'의 사진이 갖는 중요성에 주목한다. 참여 작가이자 연구자인 마이야 탐미와 해리 팔비란타가 작성한 "한 장의 사진은 예술 작품이다"라는 선언문을 지표로 삼는다. 오로지 단 하나의 사진 작품만을 선보이며, 작품에 대한 긴 설명글이나 연계되는 작품을 함께 배치하지 않는다. '단 한 장'의 사진을 제작, 배치하는 전략은 한 장의 사진을 하나의 작품으로 인식하도록 요청한다. 전시장은 한 장의 사진을 시간을 들여 바라보기 위한 사유의 장이 되며, 한 장의 사진은 그 자체로 완전성을 갖고 관객 앞에 선다.
2019년 9월, 핀란드 헬싱키에 위치한 핀란드 사진 박물관에서 처음으로 선보인 본 전시는, 이후 새로운 국가/지역을 순회하며 각지역의 작가 한 명, 작품 한 점을 추가하며 점차 확장되는 형식을 취한다. 핀란드에서 첫 전시 이후, 2022년 4월 마테리아 갤러리의 주관하에 이탈리아 로마에 위치한 ISFCI의 스파치오 두알레로 전시 장소를 옮겨, 알레산드로 단디니 데 실바의 작품이 추가되었고, 2022년 9월 일본 도쿄에 위치한 카나 카와니시 갤러리에서 히데오 안제의 작업이 추가되어 전시되었다.
2023년 3월 《One Picture Manifesto》의 선언문과 그 실천을 담은 작품들은 서울, 더레퍼런스에 안착하여 정승원 작가의 작품 한 점을 추가하고, 한 장의 사진이 가진 예술성과 선언문에 기반한 실천의 장을 공유하고자 한다.
To commemorate the 5th anniversary of The Reference, we are pleased to present the exhibition 《One Picture Manifesto》.
《One Picture Manifesto》 focuses on the significance held by “a single” photograph. It takes as its guiding reference the manifesto written by participating artists and researchers Maija Tammi and Heli Pälviranta, which declares, “One photograph is an artwork.”
Only one photographic work is presented, without any extended explanatory texts or accompanying works.
This strategy of producing and installing “just one” photograph asks viewers to recognize a single photograph as a complete artwork in itself.
The exhibition space becomes a site for contemplation, where one photograph is given time to be fully observed, and the photograph stands before the viewer as a complete entity.
First shown in September 2019 at The Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki, Finland, the exhibition has continued to travel across new countries and regions, gradually expanding by adding one artist and one work from each location.
Following its initial presentation in Finland, the exhibition moved to Spazio Duale at ISFCI in Rome, Italy, under the organization of Materia Gallery in April 2022, where the work of Alessandro Dandini de Sylva was added; in September 2022, at Kana Kawanishi Gallery in Tokyo, Japan, a work by Hideo Anze was added to the exhibition.
In March 2023, the manifesto of 《One Picture Manifesto》 and the works embodying its practice arrive in Seoul at The Reference, where one work by artist Jung Seungwon is newly added, sharing a space for the artistic value of a single photograph and the practice grounded in the manifesto.
