더레퍼런스는 OPEN PT 2022 Best Portfolio 선정 작가 이예은의 개인전 《산을 옮기는 겨자씨》를 개최합니다.

이예은은 사진을 매개로 개인의 삶에 주목하며, 이를 둘러싼 사회적 현상과 사람들의 이야기를 담아내는 작업을 이어왔습니다.

현대 사회에서 일로 생계를 유지하는 대부분의 사람들이 그렇듯, 작가의 일상은 노동으로 채워집니다. 정해진 시스템과 규칙대로 반복되는 노동의 시간은 소모적이며, 시스템에 문제가 있다는 생각이 들어도 시간 내에 업무를 처리하기 위해서, 별다른 대안을 마련하기 어렵다는 이유로 이내 잊히고 맙니다. 작가는 소모적인 환경에서 버티며 관성대로 움직이는 자신의 모습을 ‘무모하다’고 표현합니다. 하지만 견고한 조직과 시스템 속에서 버티는 개인의 모습을 그대로 전시하거나 비관하지 않고, “치기 어린 긍정”으로, “멈추지 않고 버티는 근력”으로 담아냅니다.

작가는 오랜 시간 노동해 온 가족과 노동 현장에서 만난 사람들로부터 거대한 조직 안에서 소모되는 개인이 아니라, 버티고 긍정하며 거대한 연대를 만드는 개인을 발견합니다. 그 경험은 이내 티백을 우려 바다를 만드는 <차 우리기>로, 높은 펜스에 매달린 사람의 모습을 <길이 재기>로, 건물 외벽을 껴안고 있는 모습을 <실내온도 높이기>라고 제목을 붙인 사진으로 표현되었습니다.

이러한 마음의 자세는 이번 전시의 제목처럼 “겨자씨만한 작은 믿음 아래 산을 옮길 수 있다”고 믿는 작가 자신의 의지의 표현이자, 일상을 노동으로 채우는 모두에게 함께 옮겨보자고 연대를 청하는 이야기의 시작과도 같습니다. 본 전시에서는 신작인 <길이재기>, <깊이재기>, <높이재기>를 포함해 <차 우리기>, <실내온도 높이기> 등의 <무모 연작>으로 전체를 아울러 만나보실 수 있습니다.

이예은은 사진을 매개로 개인의 삶에 주목하며, 이를 둘러싼 사회적 현상과 사람들의 이야기를 담아내는 작업을 진행하고 있다. 사회라는 거대한 구조 속에서 삶을 영위해가는 개인들의 서사에 대해 관심과 시선을 두고자 노력한다. 최근 부산에 위치한 고은사진미술관 BMW Photo Space에서 개인전 《227명의 사람들》(2022)을 선보였으며, 토탈미술관, SeMA 창고, 주한스위스대사관 등 다수의 단체전에 참여했고, 고은사진미술관 소장, 대구사진비엔날레 포트폴리오 리뷰 우수 작가에 선정된 바 있다.


The Reference presents Mustard Seed that Moves Mountains, a solo exhibition by artist Lee Ye-eun, selected for the OPEN PT 2022 Best Portfolio.



Lee Ye-eun has continued a photographic practice that focuses on individual lives, capturing the social phenomena and personal narratives that surround them. As is the case for most people in contemporary society who sustain their lives through work, the artist’s everyday routine is filled with labor. The repetitive hours of work dictated by established systems and rules are depleting, and even when she senses that these systems are flawed, such thoughts are soon pushed aside in the urgency of completing tasks within limited time, or dismissed due to the difficulty of finding viable alternatives. The artist describes her own movements—enduring a draining environment and continuing out of inertia—as “reckless.” Yet rather than exhibiting or lamenting the individual who perseveres within rigid systems and organizations, she captures this figure with “a youthful optimism,” as “a strength that endures without stopping.”



From her family, who have labored for many years, and from those she has met in various workplaces, the artist recognizes individuals who are not merely consumed by vast structures, but who persist, affirm, and form expansive solidarities. These encounters manifest in her works: Brewing Tea, in which a teabag steeps to create an ocean; Measuring Length, depicting a person hanging from a tall fence; and Raising Indoor Temperature, showing someone clinging to the exterior of a building.



This attitude of mind reflects the will embodied in the exhibition’s title—the belief that “with a faith as small as a mustard seed, one can move mountains.” It also marks the beginning of a call for collective solidarity addressed to all whose everyday lives are filled with labor. This exhibition presents the full scope of her Reckless Series, including new works such as Measuring Length, Measuring Depth, Measuring Height, alongside Brewing Tea and Raising Indoor Temperature.

Lee Ye-eun develops a practice that uses photography to highlight individual lives, capturing the social phenomena and personal stories that shape them. She seeks to sustain attention and care toward the narratives of individuals living within the vast structure of society. Recently, she held the solo exhibition 227 People (2022) at the GoEun Museum of Photography BMW Photo Space in Busan, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions at venues including Total Museum of Contemporary Art, SeMA Storage, and the Embassy of Switzerland in Korea. She has been included in the collection of the GoEun Museum of Photography and was selected as an Outstanding Artist in the Daegu Photo Biennale Portfolio Review.
