더레퍼런스는 03월 05일(화)부터 03월 17일(일)까지 피정원 작가의 개인전 ⟪검은여백과 기억의 추상⟫을 개최합니다. 피정원 작가는 어린시절 유학 생활을 통해 겪은 '타자이자 외부인으로 나'에 대한 정체성을 지속적으로 작품에 담아왔습니다. 개인의 경험과 정체성에 주목하며, 주체적인 덧칠 행위를 통해 기억과 경험을 강조하고 불안정한 균열과 의식의 상호작용을 탐구하는 작업을 지속해오고 있습니다.

그의 개인전 ⟪검은여백과 기억의 추상⟫은 파노라마적 스케일과 검은 면을 통해 추상적 예술세계를 가시화 한다. 타지에서 인상깊었던 기억을 재소환하여 구성한 대형신작 시리즈를 최초로 선보인다. 작가는 작업과정에서 안료를 섞거나 결합, 응고시켜 질감을 드러내는 마티에르 실험을 '반추상적 아카이벌 페인팅(Archival Painting)'으로 명명하고, 이 마티에르 실험을 위해 사용하는 팔레트들은 스케치하는 과정에서 나온 붓자국이면서 동시에 작가의 작업 노트의 일부이자 기록의 흔적이된다.

작가에게 있어서 정신 사유의 결과이자 사물 자체의 최소화된 개념은 색과 면으로 구분된다.

피정원 | Jungwon Phee

피정원(b. 1993)은 서울과 뉴욕에서 활동 중이며 캐나다와 미국에서의 유학생활을 경험으로 타지에서 외부인으로 살며 ‘나’라는 주체에 대한 고민을 작품에 담았다. 주요 개인전으로는 《CONFLUENCE:합》(서정아트, 서울, 한국, 2023), 《피정원:Emotional Layers》(성남큐브미술관, 성남, 한국, 2022) 등이 있다. 단체전으로는 《DEAR CABINET》(서정아트, 서울, 한국, 2023), 《Instead of a Result, a Process》(M5 갤러리, 도쿄, 일본, 2023) 등이 있다.

The Reference will host artist Phee Jungwon’s solo exhibition ⟪Black Margins and the Abstraction of Memory⟫ from Tuesday, March 5 to Sunday, March 17.



Phee Jungwon has consistently explored the identity of “myself as the Other and outsider,” shaped by her childhood years studying abroad. Focusing on personal experience and identity, she continues to investigate the interaction of unstable fractures and consciousness through her subjective act of overpainting, which emphasizes memory and experience.


Her solo exhibition ⟪Black Margins and the Abstraction of Memory⟫ visualizes an abstract artistic world through a panoramic scale and expanses of black. The exhibition presents for the first time a new large-scale series constructed by recalling and reconfiguring memorable impressions from abroad. The artist names her material experiments—mixing, combining, and solidifying pigments to reveal texture—“semi-abstract archival painting,” and the palettes used in these experiments become both the brushstrokes generated during the sketching process and, simultaneously, part of her working notes and traces of record. For the artist, the distilled outcomes of mental contemplation and the minimalized concept of the object itself are articulated through color and plane.



Jungwon Phee


Born in 1993, Phee Jungwon is based in Seoul and New York. Drawing from her experiences studying abroad in Canada and the United States, she has incorporated into her work the contemplation of “self” formed while living as an outsider in foreign places. Her major solo exhibitions include 《CONFLUENCE:합》 (Seojung Art, Seoul, Korea, 2023) and 《Phee Jungwon: Emotional Layers》 (Seongnam Cube Art Museum, Seongnam, Korea, 2022). Her group exhibitions include 《DEAR CABINET》 (Seojung Art, Seoul, Korea, 2023) and 《Instead of a Result, a Process》 (M5 Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, 2023).
