6월 20일(목)부터 30일(일)까지 진행될 염지애 작가님의 첫 개인전 ⟪Person, people⟫에 여러분을 초대합니다.

감정을 알 수 없는 창백한 얼굴과 정적인 몸짓 해가 느른해지는 어느 한때 사람들은 함께 있으나 고립되어있다. 염지애 작가의 작품에 등장하는 인물들은 감정과 생각을 알수 없다. 그저 그곳에 함께있으나 홀로 존재한다. 더레퍼런스에서 첫 개인전을 개최하게된 염지애 작가는 먹이 장지에 스며들듯 화폭에 인물들을 스미게담아낸다.      

<Person, People>은 완벽히 멀어질 수 없고 또 가까워질 수 없는 관계와 감각들에 대하여 시각적으로 풀어나간 작업을 소개한다. 개인과 다수의 사람에게 투영된 빛은 서로 간의 연결성을 상징하고 인물 뒤 여백은 비어있는 마음과 동시에 채워지지 않아 여유가 있는 상태를 나타내고 있다. 동시대의 사람들은 같은 시간을 공유하면서 끝없이 닿고 멀어지는 사이지만, 수많은 관계 속 공허함은 슬픈 것이 아닌 공허해서 자유로운 관계임을 편하게 받아들여 본다. 공허함과 자유는 반대의 지점이 아닌 같은 공기 속 함께 부유하는 것임을.

From Thursday, June 20 to Sunday, June 30, you are invited to artist Yeom Jieeae’s first solo exhibition, ⟪Person, people⟫.

A pale face without discernible emotion, a still and muted gesture—at a languid moment in the day, people are together yet isolated. The figures appearing in Yeom Jieeae’s works reveal neither emotion nor thought; they merely exist, together yet alone. In her first solo exhibition at The Reference, Yeom Jieeae renders her figures as though ink is gently seeping into jangji (traditional Korean paper), allowing them to permeate the surface of the canvas.

<Person, People> presents works that visually unfold the relationships and sensations that can neither fully distance nor draw close. The light cast upon the individual and the collective symbolizes a sense of interconnectedness, while the negative space behind each figure represents a mind that is both empty and unfilled—an openness that allows room to breathe. Contemporary individuals share the same time, endlessly nearing and drifting apart, but the emptiness within countless relationships is not sorrowful; rather, it is an emptiness that allows for freedom, a state one may accept with ease. Emptiness and freedom are not opposing points, but entities that float together within the same air.
